CHAPTER 9
Katherine McCallister---Make the Difference
I WAS SO TAKEN WITH these women. I could not believe there was such a rich history under one roof. I was riveted by each of their personal stories. Each lady had truly touched me---struck such a nerve of curiosity to learn more about them and myself in such a short amount of time. Despite my newfound appreciation for leisure, I rushed down to draw my name for the day. The name Mary Katherine McCallister was on the slip of paper with a small cross doodled on the upper right-hand corner. I smiled, remembering my encounters with Mary Kate, the pastor's wife, so far and the stories Victoria had told me about a heart to befriend the friendless. I contacted her, and she graciously asked that I come at my leisure. I went immediately to her suite, eager to get to know another of the manor residents. They each had their own tale of trial and triumph, loneliness and sharing life, and Ms. Mary Kate would be no different. She was among the favorites with the ladies at the nightly dinners. You could witness the respect and adoration they all had for her. Respect like that was earned. I knew as I walked to her suite that this story would be humbling.
She answered the door with such kindness in her greeting and invited me into a much different environment than I had experienced in the manor so far. Her surroundings were not elaborate. They were more homey and comfortable. Simple but seemingly significant---just as if going to Grandmother's house. A plaid sofa was the focal point of the sitting area, the kind that looks comfy and well used. There were two rocking chairs with a matching plaid pillow in each to the side and a handmade coffee table with some ever-aging scuffmarks in the surface. There were many pictures about the room on every surface and papering the walls. Everything was push-pinned into bulletin boards---from pictures drawn by small children to thank-you cards and hand-printed scripture or prayers. The tabletops were reserved for her framed photos, seemingly of her family. There was an open Bible placed on a lace doily in the center of her coffee table. A bookshelf that reflected a love for reading was stacked to the brim with various types of literature, tattered and marked by extensive use.
Mary Kate had her hair pulled back in a tight bun, and her reading glasses were perched on the end of her nose and connected at the earpiece by a string of beads around the back of her neck. I saw no sign of any makeup, just a clean, sweet look about her. She wore a floral dress with an apron covering the front of it, embroidered with the words Faith, Hope, and Joy. She wore plain black slides with stockings to complete the ensemble.
The room smelled heavenly. Homemade cinnamon sticky buns and hot tea flanked the right side of the coffee table. She asked me to join her for a midmorning snack.
